Description
Acacia Prison Complex underwent a $100 million expansion to provide accommodation for an additional 387 detainees. The development has increased prison capacity from 1000 to 1513, making the complex the largest prison in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere.
Acacia prison opened in May 2001, operating as a medium security prison for male detainees. The correctional facility is one of 2 privately-managed prisons in Western Australia. The prison is owned by the Department of Corrective Services which contracts management of the prison to an external service provider, Serco.
Our Challenge
Acacia’s priorities for the prison’s expansion included focussing on security, safety, organisational excellence and reducing the risk of reoffending. The development aimed to create bathroom amenities that provide a safe and secure environment for inmates and an effective water management system for the entire complex.
The tapware specified needed to address common issues and risks in a prison environment such as, self-harm, vandalism and misuse of water resources. The project had a strict timeline with short lead times in which contactors needed assistance in setting up access for services such as cabling for the electronic tapware.
