Description

The $1.4 billion Queensland Children’s Hospital currently under construction in South Brisbane will bring together the history, skills and expertise of the staff of the Royal Children’s Hospital and Mater Children’s Hospital into one purpose-built facility.

Opening in late 2014, the Queensland Children’s Hospital will be the major specialist children’s hospital for Queensland providing clinical, educational and support services to a state-wide network, as well as provide general health care to children in the local inner-Brisbane community.  A significant phase of planning and designing our new hospital is now under way – developed design.

During the developed design phase architects, builders, engineers, project managers andther consultants continue to work closely with planning groups from the Royal Children’s Hospital and Mater Children’s Hospital. Service and stakeholder advisory groups, families and users also participate, ensuring a family-centred approach.

Design principles

Key principles that have underpinned the decision-making process throughout all planning and design phases were focussing on:

  • providing services to children and young people based on the best clinical evidence, including families who care for them creating a centre of excellence in education;
  • training and research forming a physical environment that enhances patient care;
  • safety and clinical excellence and supports and promotes a healthy workforce achieving a flexible building design with infrastructure that is capable of adapting to new technologies and emerging trends in clinical practice and models of care attaining State sustainability policies and objectives;
  • including greenhouse gas and peak energy reduction, water conservation and waste minimisation and recycling
